What is micropigmentation?
Micropigmentation, also referred to as permanent makeup (PMU) or dermal pigmentation, is a process whereby organic or inorganic pigments are implanted beneath the epidermis (top layer of skin), into the dermal layer (second layer of skin), by microneedle insertion. This technique has been medically developed and specifically designed for a safe semi-permanent application. Micropigmentation is also known as cosmetic tattooing. The process is similar to tattooing since pigments are inserted into the skin; however, the aesthetic result is different – Micropigmentation creates a more natural effect.
What are the benefits of permanent make-up?
The most obvious benefit of permanent make-up is that it can simply save you time. People with busy schedules, long commutes, and numerous commitments can gain several minutes each day out of their morning routine. You never have to worry about your make-up smudging or fading. Permanent make-up does not come off after swimming, working out, or showering. Also, this technique can correct asymmetrical facial features: fill your eyebrows, define and enhance your lips.
How is permanent make-up performed?
Micropigmentation is performed with a refined digital device applying thousands of tiny little dots of pigment inserted into the skin, gradually building up a color and a defined shape. It is one of the methods of cosmetic tattoo, and the pigment usually lasts longer when applied in this manner. The healed results resemble that of a softly shaded pencil brow. The procedure begins from the point of consultation to understand your goals and expectations. The following steps include making a sketch drawing, performing the procedure, and post-procedural healing.
How long does permanent make-up last?
Permanent eyebrows specifically require regular touch-ups every 12-18 months. This does not mean that it will fade away completely, but it will need to be freshened up, as the color will not be the same. The lasting duration also depends on the skin type, climate conditions, pigments used, and pigment application depth to the skin. Permanent lip color can last a little longer than the eyebrows, even up to 2-3 years.
How long the healing period last?
The healing period lasts approximately one week. Straight after the procedure, the color will look quite intense, but 50% of it will fade during the first week. It takes a little bit longer for the color to settle. During this period, you should religiously follow the recommended tips to avoid any discomfort during healing.
What causes permanent make-up to fade?
Although permanent make-up lasts for a long time, it doesn’t mean it lasts forever. We can attribute fading to a few factors, such as skin type, age, how well the skin reacts to pigment, sun exposure, and the types of skin products you are using. Some of these are factors that one has no control over, while others are general lifestyle choices that can shorten or extend results. Younger people can notice fading sooner than aged because of a faster cellular turnover making the pigment lose its effect sooner. However, people regularly using anti-aging products experience a more immediate fading process. Also, lighter-colored permanent make-up is more prone to fading than darker shades. To take full advantage of this treatment, we recommend you protect yourself from the sun, choose the right skin products and avoid using solid acids or Retinols in your daily skincare.
What are the micropigmentation contraindications?
While micropigmentation is suitable for most people, certain factors would make this procedure dangerous to perform. Before undergoing treatment, please read about contraindications that can prevent us from proceeding with permanent make-up for you.
